MANILA, Philippines — Stiffer penalties and fines of up to P30,000 for violators of Edsa bus carousel lanes will be in effect starting November 13, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Romando Artes told INQUIRER.net on Monday.

Last week, MMDA announced the Metro Manila Council’s approval of a resolution that mandates the increase of fines for bus lane scheme violators.

Below is the list of fines as stated in MMDA Regulation No. 23-002:

  • First Offense: P5,000
  • Second Offense: P10,000 plus one-month suspension of the driver’s license and requirement to undergo a road safety seminar
  • Third Offense: P20,000 plus one-year suspension of the driver’s license
  • Fourth Offense: P30,000 plus recommendation to the Land Transportation Office for revocation of the driver’s license

MMDA currently implements a P1,000 fine and 10 demerit points on the driver’s license of bus lane violators.

This, according to MMDA Director for Traffic Enforcement Group Victor Nuñez, is not being taken seriously by offenders.
